Anything I can do to install it correctly?
I do not know if you are installing on top of Vista, but how to install XP is to start with the CD instead of hard disk. To do this, by changing the settings in the BIOS (also called CMOS). This can be accessed during startup, usually by pressing Del, F1 or F2. It's before Vista starts loading. SP1 or SP2 has nothing to do with it booting from the CD. It has to do with the OEM versions and updates. Best alternative is to return to partition the hard drive … It is usually best done with 'fdisk' … a profit of 98 Win. Then do the above … completely erase everything on your hard drive, including Vista. You better be sure you can get the drivers for XP for your hardware. IOW, if the computer "model" used is sold with two Vista and XP, there is no problem. However, if you only sold (and sold) with Vista, it is possible there are no drivers for the hardware inside the laptop to work with XP.
