c0000218 Error Windows XP
Hard Drive is partitioned with both XP home & 98 but XP won’t work?
I picked up an older computer that I was wanting to fix up for my nephews. It has both XP home and Windows 98 on it but only 98 is working. Whenever I run XP it shows a registry error:
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate
then it dumps files, counts to 100 and restarts. I have tried booting in all the different modes, even hit F8 and did the windows restore and still the same thing happens.
Any suggestions on what I should do? I don’t have any discs with it at all.
The “HIVES” are the Windows Registry…in other words, the registry is corrupted and that means XP is dead forever. Since it is an old computer, and Win 98 is TOTALLY a dead operating system and is wide open to infection from the internet, the best thing you can do is to download a free version of Linux and learn how to use it. Ubuntu is the best version of Linux, user friendly, works great on old hardware and is rock solid from a security standpoint. I suggest you wipe the hard disk and install Ubuntu. There is TONS of freebee software to use and a great forum to ask questions.
You will have to download the iso and burn an iso CD. You can use a free utility called IMGBURN to do the burning of the iso installer. Or you can order a set of Ubuntu disks from Cannonicl Ltd.
Go here to investigate and find out:

Some of the other versions are more compact and take up less disk space.
Another one of my favorite versions of Linux is Damned Small Linux, which would be perfect for your old computer:

Just follow the instructions they give you for downloading and installing.
Have fun! Linux is a great alternative to Windows and MUCH BETTER is many respects.
